>lost in love< is the first single to be taken from l-vis 1990s forthcoming debut album, neon dreams. continuing a collaborative partnership which began on last years >forever you< single, breakthrough bristol-based vocalist javeon mccarthy once again takes centre stage here. through its melodious analogue synths, infectious vocal hooks and sub-4 minute running length, >lost in love< in many ways serves as the ideal entrée to neon dreams. this is the sound of l-vis 1990 revisiting the routes of his dance music love affair. picking up his own theme from the original—the classic french bassline—l-vis 1990s neon dreams club mix pushes the low-end triumphantly to the fore. club is certainly the operative word here, feel the remixs bangalter-esque bassline drop and your minds eye fixes instinctively upon an undulating dancefloor. the night slugs allstars — l-vis 1990, bok bok, jam city — also take the floor on their version, albeit via the neon-tinged scenic route. much like the label itself, their remix is replete with colour, difficult to define and relentlessly innovative.

the checkerboard squares’ ‘double cookin’’ is a byword for the northern soul all-nighters of the 70s, when hundreds of dancers would hit the beat and clap in unison to the spirited instrumental. our discovery of two vocal versions of the song shook the rare soul world in the noughties. here we feature the tandels’ all-girl take on a song they had previously recorded to a more basic arrangement on the obscure jam-cha label.

back in 1955 an unidentified flying object was spotted by a couple of farm workers nearby llangollen s castel dinas bran (crow castle). a young man named dewi llandlenip had taken some astonishing photographs of what appears to be a ufo hovering above the ancient medieval site. he was sure, this was the presence of the time travellers. crow castle has always had a mysterious presence, but this took them by surprise, a kind of close encouter type iii. shortly after this bizarre moment they were all left stunned and knocked to the ground, the object had gone without trace and their memory obscured into a so called abduction reset.

after kicking things off with sean thomas’ (cop envy) the weigh, sydney’s outer time inner space return with a collaborative ep from jon watts, the kind-hearted, go-to sound engineer of the sydney club and experimental music scene and otis label owner, hugh burridge (aka hubert clarke jr). as resident djs for otis’ sweet echoes parties and guests for some of sydney’s more open-minded club promoters, jon & hugh have developed their own style of warm up set, largely unrestrained by genre. another view is just an extension of this open approach to club music. there’s an obvious ode to bukem’s good looking records, a lopsided mpc jam that could have been written by a drunk ron trent, a club roller with uk broken beat at it’s heart and a spaced out, dream-scape dub from melbourne mate, rings around saturn (dan white) to round out the ep. the common thread, they’re keeping it deep.

hailing from outer space via reykjavik, volruptus maps out intergalactic forms of communication on ‘alien transmissions’, the latest release from bjarki and johnny chrome silver’s inimitable bbbbbb records. title track is a disorienting dose of acid powered electropunkfunk whilst ‘jargon’ uses complex polyrhythms to propel a grinding techno stomper. ‘gett vffreakye’ uses percussive breaks and mechanised vocal chops to depict aliens having a live jam in outer space, whilst closing track ‘tesseract’ is an angular drum workout featuring animated bass and dissonant pad calls. like each bbbbbb release before it, volruptus presents an intoxicating ep that pairs impeccable sound design with an unruly approach to genre, form and style.

thule s dark doppelganger ae recordings was revived last year with the excellent freyja ep by nonnimal, and now the saga continues with this devastatingly on-point release from cold. much like the vibe on thule, the music on thule continues to channel the mood of the icy tundra into refined, modern club tracks, but there s definitely a more sinister intent at work in these tracks from cold. -aerials- is a nightmarish chugger loaded with eerie sonics, while -phased out- lays down some fine dubby processing over a bed of chilly chord pulses. -exiles- is a standout track thanks to its crafty groove, coming on a little more housey than its counterparts but still heavier than the average thule jam.

with his new release the polish transatlantyk sails into - as yet uncharted - waters of the lol- fi breakbeat house scene to bring you the debut of dj stoner dad. not much is known about the man behind the nickname, except that he is a dj, a dad and that he likes getting his hits from the bong on during the infamously long warsaw afterparties. the -raw romantics ep- showcases his own take on the deeply saturated, smokey and breakbeat-infused house genre. fake strings is a certified banger alluring the dancefloor with a great combo of rolling bass, squashed kicks and hats, grimy, atmospheric pads and a bits of spoken word thrown in. magic phunk brings that break again and for a good measure. drums are floating over an ocean worth of blazing pads, liquid synths, acid riffs, pillowy, yet dirty chords and whatever else dj stoner dad could lay his hands on at the time. iv is a full frontal ambient jam, with little bits of wandering drums coming into the picture at the very end. finally v brings cinematic influences over slightly uneasy slow groove.

the second ep by control remote finally drops with 3 stunning cuts destined to become phuture classics in years to come. the first ep was a strong seller for the shop and provided the footwork for this second ep to drop. ‘music’ on the a side gyrates a house groove with a moody man nod of guidance. this is one sure fire hot jam! on the flip we have the divine acid groove of ‘fragment of a sermon’ kicking of proceedings whilst riding locked in groove. ‘give my luv’ closes the ep off with a low rider house slide that leans to left whilst moving you to the right! this second ep by control remote sets the standard for others to follow. hotness personified!

fresh from the success of their ‘past / present / future’ release, we march on, with berlin-based italian christopher ledger the man responsible for their label’s 41st release. the ‘percezione and retrospettiva’ ep sees ledger in flying form, as he props up with two dexterous, thoughtfully executed records that speak volume of his ability to craft atmospheric sounds. opening up the release is the sounds of ‘retrospettiva 2’, a future leaning techno jam that again wonderfully fits the brouqade aesthetic. clearly indebted to sci-fi spheres, this one is very much cut from a detroit cloth, with a steely finesse that lurks from the get go. a track that brings the listener on an endless journey, it comes some deep harmonic vibes. all things told, this is an ep of various contrasting sounds, ledger’s debut for brouqade is a stunning example of what can happen when producers think outside the box. the b side consists of ‘percezione attiva’. harmonic, blissful tones abound throughout, made all the more meaningful by a slew of gentle, melancholic piano chords that really pull on the heartstrings. a light and hazy experimental piece, the track forces parallels with other masters of suspense. culminating with a more traditional 4/4 vibe, this unusual turn only enhances the producer’s standing as a man willing to take risks.

the first release on youth - a new label from andrew lyster, comes from portland based artist yard. hailing from the dark woods of the west coast of the united states, yard brings together a collection of tracks from the archives alongside some new material. canopy and white fog were originally released on the album deciduous flood plains, and have been reworked for this release. marshall acid is pressed to vinyl for the first time having previously only been available digitally via event horizon. yard’s gritty sound evokes a spectrum of gnarled city life to organic atmospheres. the release comprises of field recordings, micro-cassette mangles, bass kicks, a live jam between x0xb0x and a modded tr-606 and water drops percolating through the mixes to get that urban hum and grit running up against the forest.
